Orea Vatha

In July 2021 we were offered the opportunity to buy this land of about 6700 m2 viewing the Vatha valley on Karpathos. It reaches up to the top of the hill in the foreground.

After having visited Karpathos for 20 years and being close to retirement, we had just started looking around for a long-term rental possibility, not foreseeing to buy any property. But we did, with the help of ELXIS (https://elxis.com). Since December 2021 we are the happy owners. It feels as a privilege, but we are very much aware of the challenges.

The land houses an old cottage ('stavlos'), not used for 25 years at least, 15 olive trees, mastic bushes and beautiful vegetation that mainly shows up during winter- and springtime.

We have been renovating the house and making this land our new home since March 2022. Quite a job. For sure we are fulfilling the requirement to find yourself a "nice future project" upon retiring. :) The house has a footprint of about 55 m2 (but thick walls) to which we have added a veranda of about 20 m2.

The renovation took 1.5 year. As from late 2023 we live in our new home, while still working on loose ends.

For a few years now, we have been on Karpathos for ~6 months spread over the year. Every morning, viewing the valley and the sea, feels like another day in paradise. We keep our home in the Netherlands.
